The pet packing list we wish every host shared
What to pack for a pet-friendly stay in Europe, from the documents people forget to the towel that saves the sofa.
Hosts can leave a bowl. They cannot pack your animal's life. The list below is the one we send friends before a first TravelTail weekend. Adjust it for a cat who has never seen a ferry, or a dog who has seen too many.
Papers and health
- Identification that matches the animal traveling with you.
- Vaccination and health records your route actually requires. Cross-border trips, especially into Iceland, are a paperwork project. Read the official rules before you pack the sweater.
- Any medication, with more days than the trip.
- The name of a clinic near the stay, looked up before you need it.
The bag
- Food from home for the first days, plus the usual bowl if they are particular.
- A short leash and a longer one, not one leash asked to do both jobs.
- Waste bags, more than you think, because a new city makes you lose them.
- A towel. Cabins, canals, and beaches all end in a wet animal and a nice sofa.
- A familiar bed or shirt. The Punavuori Loft provides a pet bed; your cat may still want the one that smells like your house.
- A harness or carrier that you have already practiced with.
What you can leave behind
A full toy box, a second coat for a mild weekend, and any gadget you have not trained. Pack the thing that prevents the specific problem of this trip: booties if pavements will be salted or hot, a crate if the listing asks for one, a muzzle if the train requires it.
Tell the host what you are bringing when you request a stay. A crate that does not fit through a canal-house door is a sad thing to discover at the top of the stairs.
